Arsenal Stadium

For much of the club’s history, Arsenal played at Arsenal Stadium (also known as Highbury). However, reduced capacity there limited earnings and the club embarked upon designing and building a new stadium, completed in 2006. Called Emirates Stadium for its corporate sponsor, the airline company of the same name, it seats over 60,000 people, making it the fifth-largest football stadium in the United Kingdom. However, many Gooners, upset over their club selling the corporate naming rights, refer to the stadium as Ashburton Grove. A roof covers the four tiers of the stadium, but leaves the pitch exposed to the elements. Known as one of the best playing surfaces in the world, the stadium also features two giant screens to allow supporters to follow the action on the pitch.

Originally based on the southeast side of London, the club now known by supporters as the Red Army began modestly as Dial Square, formed by workers at the Royal Arsenal in 1886. Five years later the team began professional play before joining the Football League in 1893. Known since 1891 as Woolwich Arsenal, the club made the First Division in 1904 before becoming bankrupt in 1910 and moving several years later to the current location in North London, dropping the Woolwich in the process.

In the illustrious history of the Red Army, no manager has coached longer or won more matches than Arsene Wenger, the French national who has been at the head of the club since 1996. A move initially met with trepidation by the local media, Wenger had to overcome the stigma of being the club’s first foreign-born manager. An attacking manager known as a purist, Wenger quickly earned the respect of former critical fans and media in his second season when he lead the Gunners to the Premier League title and won the FA Cup. A second Double followed in 2001-2002, eventually leading to one of the best seasons in the history of elite football in Europe: an undefeated season in 2003-2004, achieved only two other times at the highest level of European football. In September of 2007, Wenger signed a three-year contract to remain Arsenal’s manager.

Former player George Graham resurrected Arsenal once again after taking over in 1986, winning six titles in eight years. Using his own brand of strict discipline, Graham adjusted on the fly from an attack-oriented manager into one relying more on defensive sets, tactics that led to the first FA Cup and League Cup double in 1992-1993. Graham lost his job after accepting an illegal payment from a Norwegian agent who had handled the transfer of two players to Arsenal in 1992.

Under the guidance of Herbert Chapman and, later, Joe Shaw and George Allison, Arsenal won five League championships and two FA cups during the 1930s, the first period of dominance for the club. However, Arsenal descended into mediocrity for several decades until a brief resurgence at the end of the 1960s that included the first European trophy in club history, the UEFA Fairs Cup in 1970.

Few football clubs in the world can match the history of Arsenal, the Premier League team based in Highbury, North London. Possessing one of the largest fan bases in the world, the club appeals as much to people all over the world as it does to those from the areas around Emirates Stadium, no doubt due in large part to the appeal of all-time leading goalscorer Thierry Henry, an Arsenal fixture from 1999 to 2007.

Everton also has the honor of having nine of their former players inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. Earlier this year, we saw Ray Wilson inducted, and this further reinforced the legitimacy of Everton as a true dominant club in English football. At the start of the ‘03-’04 season, several former Everton players were voted in by club supporters, as the ‘Greatest Ever Team’. That season also saw the club celebrating their 125th anniversary. Everton Stadium

Goodison Park, also known as Everton Stadium, was built in 1892. The stadium can comfortably seat 40,158 spectators, and is nicknamed ‘The Grand Old Lady’ by its fans. It has an all grass pitch, and is noted as the world’s first purpose built football stadium. The stadium has seen much development throughout its existence, and also played host to numerous international fixtures and events. From the FA Cup Final to the 1996 FIFA World Cup, it has been the venue for some of the most historic football matches to date. Although a new stadium in the Kirkby section of Liverpool is being considered, the hearts of Everton and its followers remain at Goodison Park.

Located in Liverpool, and founded in 1878, Everton is the sixth most successful club in British football. Led by current manager, David Moyes, the club has amassed several high profile championships and victories over the years. Everton has won the FA Cup 5 times, the League Championship 9 times, and also won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in ‘84-’85. The club has a solid foundation, rich in tradition and sportsmanship, and have received near landmark status in English club football. Everton shares a historic rivalry with Liverpool FC, and play in their home ground of Goodison Park.

Everton, also known as “The People’s Club”, will always be one of the greatest clubs in English football. With plans currently underway for a new stadium, legions of fans, and a forever sense of pride and fan admiration, Everton FC, will continue to be a standout team in the Premiership, and all over the world.

Back in the ’20’s and ’30’s, Dixie Dean, known as one of the most dominant goal-scorers to date, set a record for league goals in a single season, 60. This English national record has yet to be broken. From Joe Royle and Neville Southall, to Ted Sagar and the legendary David Watson, Everton has always offered top notch football that is second to none. They are known to be quick on the pitch, offensively and defensively sound, and never give up no matter what predicament they are in. Everton were also co-founders of the Premier League in 1992 and are dubbed ‘The People’s Club’.

David Moyes, Everton Manager, is among several who have shared memorable moments at Goodison Park. The Scottish national joined Everton in March of 2002, after leading Preston North End to several successful finishes four years prior. From Celtic to Bristol City, Moyes took over the club as a seasoned veteran with experience, skill, and determination. He led Everton to a decent placing in his first season, and received the prestigious LMA Manager of The Year award. David continued to bring prominence to the club, by signing noteworthy players and tackling obstacles. Although he lost Wayne Rooney early in his tenure, Moyes surpassed his detractors in the years to come. He advanced Everton into the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, and took the LMA Manger of the Year once again. The arrival of Tim Howard a few seasons ago, further cemented David’s legacy as a wise and premier manager in Everton.
